Scope and Contents

Consists of a draft manuscript and typed scripts (some annotated) for ‘Under the Red Robe: a play in four acts’.
‘Under the Red Robe’ was first performed at the Haymarket Theatre in London in Oct 1896 (running for 253 performances).
The play was first shown in New York in Dec 1896 at the Empire Theatre. It was also shown at the Harlem Opera House (Dec 1897), Grand Opera House (28 Feb 1898), and the Empire Theatre (Dec 1896 and Apr 1898).
The original novel by Stanley Weyman was published in 1894 and film adaptations followed Rose’s adaptation. These films (all titled ‘Under the Red Robe’) were by directed by Wilfred Noy (1915), Alan Crosland (1923) and Victor Sjöström (1937).
