Scope and Contents

Writing from the Academic Assistance Council, Adams says it is necessary for the [1936] February 21 Council to consider assistance to some 20 German scientists in British institutions previously supported by temporary Imperial Chemical Industries' grants. The scientists in question did not know how long the arrangement would continue; in fact most grants would end in July. This affects about 14 scientists, most of whom have approached the AAC as an alternative. Adams asks for Rutherford's advice on the 'acute problem' raised as the AAC does not have the necessary financial resources to support a further 14 men as the Council must continue to support those it already under its care. The public will not appreciate the distinction between those supported by the AAC and those 'introduced by other agencies' and the reputation of the AAC will consequently be damaged by the scientists coming onto our labour market. Adams refers to an anonymous example of a potential £250 per annum award application that would have been viewed as unfair competition with criticism of the AAC, which had no responsibility whatever. The Home Office has expressed anxiety about those supportd by ICI as they cannot be compelled to return to Germany but cannot be allowed 'to become public charges'. Adams is enquiring about positions in South America and the USSR for the 14 but that will take 6-9 months and the AAC should perhaps publicly announce it cannot maintain those previously brought to Britain by ICI. Adams sincerely hopes that a solution may be found to satisfy the interestes of all parties.
