Scope and Contents

Bound volume of typescript letters sent from HATF to his wife, Florence Kathleen (nee Ogilvie) for the period 17 January to 1 December 1915. The letters begin on 17 January with HATF leaving for France and end with his arrival in Salonika on 1 December. As the holder of a commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps, HATF was mobilised with the 85th Field Ambulance and spent most of 1915 in the vicinity of Ypres. In October his unit began preparations for moving to Macedonia to serve in Struma valley.
The letters were transcribed by Florence Fairbank and contain occasional non-contemporaneous notes and comments.
