Scope and Contents

'Man and Music' was a television series produced by Granada Television for broadcast on Channel 4. It was a history of music in Western civilisation, setting it in its social and historical context, and was envisaged as a long-term project to be carried out over a period of ten years. However, it was broadcast for just three years from 1986 to 1988 and consisted of 22 episodes; not the 100 programmes originally intended.
The broadcast episodes consisted of the following:
Composer and Court (4 programmes), 1986
Classical Vienna (6 programmes), 1987
Vienna, the end of an Empire (3 programmes), 1987
Russia before the Revolution (3 programmes), 1987
Rome: Renaissance and Baroque (3 programmes), 1988
Georgian London (3 programmes), 1988
The concept of 'Man and Music' was to be a multi-media event, manifesting itself not simply in television programmes but in a wide range of media, including video recordings, long-playing records, books and other publications.
Stanley Sadie was appointed as music consultant to the television series and as series editor for the eight books which were written in conjunction with the television series and published from 1989 to 1993.
Contains correspondence and notes on the initial proposal for the series; draft outlines, draft scripts and related correspondence; printed booklets produced to accompany the series.
