Research: Borley Rectory (1929-1970), 1929-1970
Scope and Contents
Borley Rectory, once famous as 'the most haunted house in England', was built in 1862, damaged by fire in 1939, and demolished in 1944. The site of occasional alleged hauntings, reports multiplied greatly after the Daily Mirror published an account of a visit in 1929 by Harry Price (1881-1948), paranormal researcher. Price published two books on his alleged findings of paranormal activity. In the 1950s a formal investigation by Eric Dingwall, Kathleen Goldney and Trevor Hall of SPR, rejected most of Price's findings and cast doubt on his credibility, and published a report, 'The haunting of Borley Rectory', in 1956.
