Name card of Mao Feng-lai and Ma Chien-ts'ai, circa 1878
Scope and Contents
The name card of Mao Feng-lai and Ma Chien-ts'ai, judges of Liu-ch'iu, including the Chinese character 'cheng' on the front cover, and the official title and name on the second page of the first fold. The writing is in black ink on red paper. An English note matches the Chinese writing to Mao and Ma's Japanese names, namely 'Tomigawa' and 'Yonabara'.
The card may have been intended for use at a meeting held with English, American and Dutch ministers in November 1878 (recorded in the 'Dictionary of the History of Liu-ch'iu'),
