Scope and Contents
'Treaties of Peace ... reprinted from the Chinese Repository' [Canton, 1851 or later], 52 folios, excluding the cover, consisting of the 'Treaty between Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and the Emperor of China, signed in the English and Chinese languages at Nanking, August 29th, 1842'; the 'Supplementary Treaty signed by Their Excellencies Sir Henry Pottinger and Kiying [Ch'i-ying], at the Bogue, October 8th, 1843'; the 'Treaty Concluded between the United States of America and the Ta-tsing Empire, signed in the English and Chinese languages, at Wánghiá by Their Excellencies Caleb Cushing and Kiying, July 23d, 1844'; the 'Treaty between His Majesty the King of the French and the Emperor of China, signed in the French and Chinese languages at Whampoa, October 24th, 1844'; and the 'General Regulations under which the British Trade is to be Conducted at the Five Ports of Canton, Amoy, Fuhchau [Foochow], Ningpo, and Shánghái'. The treaties are in Chinese, with parallel texts variously in English or French, and commentaries in English.
