Scope and Contents

'Reed's Miss Bird's} Japan': undated notes in Parkes' hand taken from Vasily Mikhailovich Golovnin, 'Memoirs of a Captivity in Japan, During the Years 1811, 1812, and 1813, with Observations on the Country and the People' (the 2nd edition of Golovnin's 'Narrative of my Captivity in Japan', 1818) (3 vols; London, 1824), vol. 2, p. 136, and from Sir Edward Reed, 'Japan: Its History, Traditions, and Religions. With the Narrative of a Visit in 1879' (2 vols; London, 1880), vol. 1, pp. 273 and 279. There are also further notes, apparently in response to writings by Reed and [Francis Ottiwell?] Adams.
