Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous printed documents from Australia, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, India and the United States, including some items in French and German.

The largest document is an untitled compilation of correspondence of the Hong Kong Colonial Secretary's Office, the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce, the London Chamber of Commerce, the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce and others, and some related documents, 1888-1890, 53 pages, divided into sections on various subjects, including the import trade of Hong Kong; S.S. 'Sara'; the Office of the Hongkong, Canton & Macao Steam-boat Co. Ltd; smuggling by river steamers to Canton; Eastern Postal Rates; the China Association; fees and commissions chargeable to ships in distress and on damaged cargoes; and the Gap Rock Lighthouse and light dues.

The remaining documents include 'Copies of official notices and correspondence bearing upon Capt. Elliot's truce', covering 1841-1842; the text of a Tariff Bill passed in the United States on 29 August 1842; two memorials from European and native merchants of Bombay to the Court of Directors of the East India Company regarding the pass duty on Malwa opium, 1844-1845; 'Proceedings relative to the formation of the Seamen's Bethel at Whampoa', 1849; 'Report of a Commission appointed to make comparative experiments on the strength and flexibility of the Mast Timbers of New Zealand, the Floridas, and the North', 1851; 'Copy of a letter from the Right Honorable [sic.] W.E. Gladstone to John Masterman, Esq., M.P., in reply to the memorial on the subject of the tea duty', 1853; 'An Act to make provision for certain Immigrants' by the Government of Victoria, New South Wales, 1855; a printed proposal for the renewing of subscriptions to the Morrison Education Society, Hong Kong, signed by the secretary, James Legge, 1856; a pamphlet containing an English version of two articles by Edward Laboulaye on American affairs, 1862; lottery tickets of the Third Hants Artillery Volunteers, Portsmouth Dockyard, 1864; subscription list for the Gough Memorial, 1869; 'Memorial on China freights' by the General Shipowners' Society of London, 1870; the articles 'The Great Work' by the Revd Professor Kirk, 1871, and 'War to the Knife, And the Knife to the Hilt' by John Bramley, 1872, regarding the Good Templar Order; notice from the Association for the Protection of Commercial Interests as respects wrecked or damaged property', 1871; an extract from 'The Review' on the loss of four steamers, 1873; a label from a tea chest, c. 1874; 'Returns called for by Mr. J.P. Bisset at special meeting of rate-payers held on 8th June, 1874' (1 booklet, Shanghai, 1875); Minutes of a General Meeting of the Calcutta Tea Syndicate, c. 1879; two copies of a memorandum on the commercial development of Siberia, 1881; a draft deed of partnership of 'Jardine, Matheson and Company's Piers and Godowns', 1883, missing the first two pages; a report on the Balmoral Gold Mine, Mt McDonald, N.S.W., 1889; a booklet entitled 'Description of the photographs of The Siege in Peking, taken by Charles A. Killie, of Peking', c. 1900; a memorandum of disbursements and allowances on Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s steamers, undated; library rules of the U.S. flagship 'Hartford'; 'Directions for collecting objects of natural history' by the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and a prospectus of a General Hospital at Shanghai.
