Letter and protest re the loss of the 'Harvest', 1865
Scope and Contents
A printed copy of a letter from H. Hackfeld & Co., agents of the late Hawaiian barque 'Harvest', to R.C. Wyllie, His Hawaiian Majesty's Minister of Foreign Affairs, dated Honolulu, 10 August 1865, noting their protest against commander James E. Waddell of the 'so-called' Confederate steamer 'Shenandoah' for instigating the burning of the 'Harvest' while the latter was riding at anchor near Ascension Island in April 1865, and claiming the sum of $75,000, with interest, as indemnity. The letter is followed by a copy of the protest sworn by J.C. Pfluger, of and for H. Hackfeld & Co., before John H. Paty, Notary Public, against Waddell for unlawfully violating the property of Hawaiian subjects, and claiming the aforementioned indemnity.
