Scope and Contents

A subject file of the Shipping Department, Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, regarding the Yangtze river vessels of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. The file contains copies and some originals of correspondence (including telegrams) between Jardine Matheson, Hankow, Hong Kong and Shanghai; correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and other correspondents, including Boustead & Co. Ltd (Agents, Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd), Singapore, H.B.M. Consulate General, Shanghai, Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and the Registrar of Shipping, Hong Kong; some correspondence of Jardine, Matheson & Co. (India) Ltd and Jardine, Skinner & Co., Owners' Representatives of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, Bombay, with MacDonald, Hamilton & Co., Sydney, N.S.W., and Mackinnon, Mackenzie & Co., Colombo, Agents, Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd; and related letters and papers, including the following documents:

1. Specifications of ships.

2. Blueprints of the vessels I.C.N. 21, I.C.N. 31 and 'Paowo'.

3. A black and white photograph of S.S. 'Siangwo' at Shasze, Middle Yangtsze River, 10 August 1937 (two copies and a negative).

4. 'Report on departure of H.M.S. Kungwo from Singapore, Subsequent loss through Enemy Action and Log of Events to Date' by the Commanding Officer of the 'Kungwo', 1 March 1942.

5. 'The Naval History of the H. M. S. Pingwo' by R.I. Groundwater, 1946, 5 pages.

6. Tables stating the position of the Yangtsze River Craft at 1 August 1946.

7. A black and white photograph of S.S. 'Pingwo', 1947.

The file is divided into the following sections: Yangtze Craft General, S.S. 'Fuhwo', Hulk 'Han Chuan', S.S. 'Hsin Chang Wo', S.S. 'Kungwo', S.S. 'Kutwo', S.S. 'Liwo', S.S. 'Minwo', S.S. 'Paowo', S.S. 'Pingwo', Hulk 'Siangtan', S.S. 'Siangwo', S.S. 'Tungwo' and Hulk 'Wuhan'.

The folder is labelled on the front cover 'Yangtze River Vessels MS.130 1942 - 1954', 'C5-A' and 'Handed by Mr To. Jan. 69'.
