Scope and Contents

Correspondence of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd regarding staff casualties during the Second World War. There are two sections, in which the letters are arranged alphabetically by name of staff member.

1. Foreign casualties: correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong and Shanghai, General Managers, Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, and between them and other correspondents, including Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and the Ministry of Pensions, Blackpool, 1945-1947, regarding the following staff members: Henry Edward Bland, Purser, S.S. 'Fooshing'; C.J. Capes, Purser, S.S. 'Fausang'; Captain Norman Cook, Master, S.S. 'Fuhwo'; Munir Tehviatullovich Deusheff, A.P. Guard, S.S. 'Wosang'; Captain H.M. Nielson; E.C. Oates, Third Officer, S.S. 'Yatshing'; Mr Thomas, 2nd Officer, Tug 'Saucy'; Captain William George Walter, S.S. 'Mausang'; and H.A. Whittle, Chief Officer, S.S. 'Yusang'. Two letters are in Russian.

There are also three copies of a list recording the fate of Indo-China staff who were killed or died during internment, featuring J.M. Broom, C.J. Capes, C.M. Cater, N. Cook, J. Copland, R. Danielson, K.D. Dawson, W. McG. Deuchars, A. Dunn, J.G. Foster, D. Harley, R.J.T. Hopkins, A.M. Jewell, R.L. Jones, J.V. King, R. Lane, J. Manson, C. Moore, J.G. Murray, E.C. Oates, J.E. Ramsay, A. Robertson, W. Spark, H.A. Whittle and T. Wilkinson, November 1945, and a list of Indo-China vessels lost during Japanese action, enclosed with a letter from the Marine Superintendent, Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, Shanghai, to H.M.B. Consul General, Shanghai, 14 January 1947.

2. Chinese casualties: correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tientsin, Agents or General Managers, Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, and between them and other correspondents, 1946, regarding the following staff members: Choo/Chin/Chu Wing Koo (Tsuie Wen Kao), 5th Engineer, S.S. 'Esang', and Chan Mok Sang, electrician, and Tseu Ngoh Sing, refrigeration fitter, S.S. 'Tak Sang'. There are also copies of two letters exchanged between the Bombay and Calcutta Agencies of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, 8 December 1942 and 26 March 1943, enclosed with a letter from Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, to Jardine Matheson, Shanghai, 15 March 1946, regarding Chinese crew casualties of S.S. 'Tak Sang', and two copies of a list of fatal Chinese casualties among crew of the Indo-China vessels 'Chaksang', 'Taisang' and 'Taksang', undated.
