Scope and Contents

The ring-binder is labelled '1953/54 Private & Confidential Singapore: Henry Waugh & Co., Ltd.' and is numbered 37. It is divided into three sections:

1. Agreement: correspondence (including telegrams and extracts of telephone conversations) between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, and Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, Singapore, with related letters and papers, 18 December 1953-13 January 1954.

The papers include correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Deacons, Hong Kong; copies of an agreement and supplemental agreement for the sale of stock in Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd from Henry Alan Waugh and Eileen Louise Bertha Waugh, Trustees of the late Henry Waugh, to Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, both 17 December 1953; and a memorandum from J.H. Keswick, Singapore, to R. Gordon regarding the 'Henry Waugh Agreement', 18 December 1953.

2. Notes and Reports: notes of visits, reports of meetings and other papers, with some related private and confidential correspondence of Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, February 1953-October 1955, including the following documents:

a) Notes of discussions regarding Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd.

b) 'Preliminary Report of J.M. & Co. Team (P. Morrison and H. Sidbury) on Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd., Singapore', February 1953.

c) Notes on a visit to Singapore by J.H. Keswick and H.D.M. Barton of 14-18 December 1953 by H.D.M. Barton, Hong Kong, 19 December 1953.

d) Notes on a visit to Penang of 24-27 January 1954 by H.D.M. Barton.

e) Notes on Penang Estates and Mines Departments of Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, dated Penang, January 1954.

f) A memorandum on columbite, dated Singapore, February 1954.

g) Notes on H.D.M. Barton and D.I. Bosanquet's visit to Kuala Lumpur of 28-30 January 1954 by H.D.M. Barton, Singapore, 2 February 1954.

h) Notes on H.D.M. Barton's visit to Singapore of 30 January-5 February 1954, dated Hong Kong, 8 February 1954.

i) A report on the domestic situation in Bangkok, 10 January 1955.

j) A memorandum from E.F. Watts, Hong Kong, to H.D.M. Barton on Henry Waugh & Co., 18 October 1955.

3. Notifying Principals: a small set of correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, with related letters and papers, including a list of Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd's offices, 9 December 1953-29 January 1954.
