Scope and Contents

Private and confidential correspondence between James McHugh, Washington D.C. and Knoxville, Maryland, and Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, regarding politics in the United States, particularly in relation to the Far East. The letters include McHugh's regular reports on the situation in the United States, many of which are addressed to J.H. Keswick at Hong Kong, Shanghai or London. There are also some copies of semi-official correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Balfour, Guthrie & Co. Ltd, New York, regarding the annual renewal of McHugh's contract. The main correspondents are H.D.M. Barton, D.I. Bosanquet, I.D. Bruce, R. Gordon, J.H. Keswick, W.J. Keswick, D.F. Landale, J. McHugh F.A. Pollock and E.F. Watts. There are also press cuttings and other papers exchanged between McHugh and Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd.

Ltd's copies of the McHugh correspondence (J4/37), but there are some differences in the letters found in each series for corresponding years, as well as in the press cuttings and other papers enclosed with the letters. J4/9/1 contains correspondence regarding the firm's hiring of McHugh.
