Scope and Contents

Private and confidential correspondence of Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, with Jardine, Matheson & Co. (Caribbean) Ltd, British West Indies (Port of Spain); Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd, Singapore; and Jardine Matheson, Tokyo, with some personal correspondence and related papers:

1. Original personal letters from D.I. Bosanquet, Singapore, to H.D.M. Barton, Hong Kong, and copies of personal letters from Barton to Bosanquet, 10 February-23 April 1957. There are also notes of a meeting of the Board of Directors of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in Hong Kong on 5 February 1957 concerning Malaya.

The subjects covered include Aokam shares; Condair; the political situation in Singapore and Malaya; and Henry Waugh & Co. Ltd shares.

2. Copies of private and confidential letters nos 1-40 from H.D.M. Barton (mainly) and D.C. Geddes, Hong Kong, to D.I. Bosanquet (mainly) and E.F. Watts, Singapore, 5 January-3 December 1957.

3. Original private and confidential letters nos 26 from D.I. Bosanquet, Singapore, to H.D.M. Barton, Hong Kong, 2 January 1957, and 1-42 and 44-58 from D.I. Bosanquet, L.E.C. Letts and E.F. Watts, Singapore, to H.D.M. Barton, Hong Kong, 10 January-27 December 1957. A note records that no. 43 was cancelled.

4. Copies of private and confidential letters nos 1, 10 November 1955, and 2-6 and 8-12, 1 February-5 December 1957, from J.H. Keswick and (mainly) W.J. Keswick, London, to D.I. Bosanquet and E.F. Watts, Singapore. No. 7 was cancelled.

The subjects covered include Bousteads; 'Guesstimate', 1957; J.M. Howie; F.M.V. Johnstone (staff); Paterson, Simons & Co. Ltd; and H.A. Waugh.

5. Copies of private and confidential letters nos 2-9 from D.I. Bosanquet and E.F. Watts, Singapore, to W.J. Keswick, London, 11 March-11 December 1957.

The subjects covered include Bousteads; 'Guesstimate', 1957; F.M.V. Johnstone (staff); Shigeharu Matsumoto; and H.A. Waugh.

6. Copies of private and confidential letters nos 1-19 from J.H. Keswick and W.J. Keswick, London, to G.J.P. Carey, Port of Spain, Trinidad, 4 January 1956-11 November 1957.

The subjects covered include Gerald Carey; the future of the West Indies Navigation Co., including the Chartered Freighter Service; 'Johann Ahlers' - U.S. Dollar Freight; and West Indies shipping.

7. A set of letters labelled 'H.K./Tokyo P. & C.s 1955/1957' comprised of copies of private and confidential letters nos 1-8 from E.F. Watts, Tokyo, to R. Gordon, Hong Kong, 7 January-18 March 1955, as well as unnumbered semi-official letters from I.F. Aucott, Tokyo, to H.D.M. Barton, Hong Kong, 21 September 1955, 14 October 1955, 2 November 1956, 5 and 23 April 1957 and 8 October 1957, and an unnumbered semi-official letter from Barton to Aucott, 14 November 1957.

The subjects covered include accounts; British Commonwealth Films Co.; C.B. Campbell (staff); Dodwell & Co. Ltd, Japan; Japanese staff; Kabushiki Kaisha; staff/labour problems; staff problems - Hibiya Inn; and taxation.

8. A set of letters labelled 'H.K./Tokyo P. & C. 1955/1957' comprised of copies of private and confidential letters nos 1-2 from R. Gordon, Hong Kong, to E.F. Watts, Tokyo, 4 January 1955 and 18 February 1955, and two unnumbered private and confidential letters from D.C. Geddes, Hong Kong, to E.F. Watts, Tokyo, 8 and 22 September 1956, as well as unnumbered semi-official letters to I.F. Aucott, Tokyo, from H.D.M. Barton, Hong Kong, 16 and 29 September 1955 and 18 April 1957, and J.H. Keswick, Hong Kong, 2 November 1955, and a personal letter from D.C. Geddes, Hong Kong, to E.F. Watts, Tokyo, 8 September 1956.

The subjects covered include I.F. Aucott; C.B. Campbell; Dodwell & Co. Ltd, Japan; finance; San Miguel Brewery; and staff annual increases.
