Notice of Chin lien tang, 1849

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS JM/H1/52

Scope and Contents

A printed notice by Chin lien tang (Jin lian tang), a cloth and silk guild in Kwangtung (Guangdong province), 20 March 1849, concerning the foreign merchants. The notice begins by stating that since the trouble with Britain in 1841 the guild's business has declined. The authors record that there have been rumours recently that the English have been entering the city, and they express their shock at this news, because for hundred years none of the foreign businessmen have ever been allowed to open businesses in Kwangtung. They call for a meeting to be held to establish regulations for governing trade with the foreigners.
