Scope and Contents
Sir Thomas Gage, MS volume, Drawings of English butterflies from real insects with occasional remarks by the author. Vol. I. 1799. The volume is stamped on a front page 'Miss Dalton', and annotated (by her?) in pencil, 'This work was written by Sir Thomas Gage Bart in 1799. The plates are also drawn and coloured by him.' Gage writes 'The greatest part of them are taken from the real insects, which I caught at different times'. Others were copied from Donovan's British insects and Wilkes's Tables. The Latin names were taken from Linnaeus's System of nature, the English from Barbut, Wilkes and Donovan. 30 pen and watercolour wash figures. 1 volume only. Bookplate, coat of arms, coloured, two coats conjoined, the left hand coat that of Dalton
