Scope and Contents

Volume of popular songs, with melodies, inscribed on inside front cover 'This collection of songs is in the hand writing of Sir Thomas Gage 5th Bart', i.e. Sir Thomas Rookwood Gage (c.1720-96). The song Johnny Wilkes, on the politician and journalist John Wilkes (1725-97), probably places the compilation of the volume in the late 1760s or 1770s. The words of The hunting song in Apollo and Daphne were composed by Paul Whitehead (1710-74). Inside the front cover are a few additional verses, in pen and pencil. [1] St. George for England (first line 'Why should we speak of Arthur and his knights'); [2] Love's like a loosness ('By the fierce flames of love I'm innocently taken'); [3] John & Jone ('John came suitering unto Jone'); [4] Friendly advice ('Young gallants who are single, be carefull how you marry'); [5] A tailor is a man ('The charming Indian weed both green and Bohea'); [6] The Devil & Lawier [lawyer] ('There was a mad man and a rag man'); [7] The hunting song in Apollo and Daphne ('Away, away, we've crownd the day'); [8] A light heart & thin pair of breeches ('Ye frolicksome sparks of the game'); [9] Johnny Wilks ('Johnny Wilks is training hard with his Association'); [10] A warning to the clergy ('There was a preacher once so fat'); [11] The celestial hunt ('Songs of shepherds in rustical roundilays'); [12] Charming Nancy ('What tho' I'm no poet, my song it will shew it'); [13] The big bellyd bottle ('The women all tell me I'm false to my lass'); [14] The magpy in the meeting house ('Good people draw near and soon you shall hear'); [15] On the Gunpowder Plot (dualogue and song 'Of Katesby, Vaux and Garnet'); [16] Bessy ('So lovesick was I, I thought I should die'); [17] Untitled ('Who has e'er been at Paris, must needs know the Greve'); [18] Song written by a religious man in a convent in France ('À Perrine une jour Du- meney disoit', translated 'As Dumene one day grave Doctor Perrin met'); [19] In praise of a hump ('Tis some time since into my thoughts it did jump'); [20] One long Whitsun hollyday ('One long Whitsun hollyday'); [21] The Vicar of Bray ('In good King Charles' golden days')
