Visitation of Suffolk, 1561, 1814-1837
Scope and Contents
The original MS of his heraldic visitation of Suffolk, 1561, formerly Phillipps MS 3802, was acquired by Lord Iveagh in 1914 and purchased by Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich, as part of the Iveagh MSS, in 1987. The most recent transcription and edition, by Joan Corder (Harleian Society publications, New Series, Vols. 2-3, 1981-84), was made from a 16C office copy, College of Arms MS G.7, with reference to the Iveagh copy. Hengrave 38 is a transcription of The Visitation of the Countie of Suffolk taken by William Hervye Esqr alias Clarencieux in the yeare 1561, paper watermarked in places 1814, entries rearranged alphabetically by surname, no drawings of arms, which has the bookplate of Sir Thomas Gage, and a colour-washed bookplate of Hervey in heraldic tabard in an initial letter T. [Hengrave 20 is a 19C transcript, by WL, 1837, Visitation of Suffolk by William Harvey Clarenceux, 1561, with heraldic notes made in various mansions and churches in the county.
