 Series
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Hengrave 20

Scope and Contents

The original MS of Hervey's heraldic visitation of Suffolk, 1561, formerly Phillipps MS 3802, was acquired by Lord Iveagh in 1914 and purchased by Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich, as part of the Iveagh MSS, in 1987. The most recent transcription and edition, by Joan Corder (Harleian Society publications, New Series, Vols. 2-3, 1981-84), was made from a 16C office copy, College of Arms MS G.7, with reference to the Iveagh copy. Hengrave 20 is a 19C transcript, by WL, 1837, 'Visitation of Suffolk by William Harvey Clarenceux, 1561, with heraldic notes made in various mansions and churches in the county. From the original in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillips Bart by whose permission this copy has been made'. With pen drawings of coats of arms. Bookplate of John Gage. Hengrave 38 is a transcription of the Visitation, rearranged alphabetically by surname, which has the bookplate of Sir Thomas Gage.
