Wartime and Post-War Contacts, 1940-1949

 Sub-Series
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Gardiner/ H/1

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

RG was anxious to re-establish contact with his German friends as soon as possible and see what could be revived in the way of youth work and cultural activities. For his efforts to locate and help friends, see the correspondence file 'German Friends' J/2/1. He was in contact with revived youth organisations and was also keen to document and explain the pre-war activities of the Buende, and so corresponded with interested historians, but his main involvement in post-war Europe came through his farming and conservation work, which brought him into contact with German pioneers of landscape such as Alwyn Seiffert. RG was a founder member of the Europaischer Arbeitskreis fur Landschaftspflege (EAFL) in 1963 and participated in its conferences. His word in this field was recognised in 1971 by the award of the Lenne Gold Medal for Landscape Husbandry (see B/5/3)
