School, University, Youth Work UK, 1916

 Series
Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Gardiner/ C

Scope and Contents

RG seems to have enjoyed his time at West Downs Preparatory School, especially the Scouting activites, which he described in letters to his parents (B3/2-5). He was unhappy at Rugby, and transferred to Bedales School in 1919. At Cambridge he was again unhappy, and criticized it later as being over-intellectual. Nevertheless at Cambridge he made lifelong friends and became involved in folk-dancing and youth organisations, especially Kibbo Kift (C6). Since RG was working for cooperation between youth in England and Germany there is some overlap between this section and section D.
