Sweet pea notebook '07 I' [1907 crosses], 1907
Scope and Contents
Notebook recording Bateson and Punnett's experiments with sweet pea crosses in 1907.
Records are paginated 1-187, followed by a long run of blank pages. At the back of the book is a set of notes dated 30 Apr. 1907 [pp i(v)-ii(r)] along with maps showing the layout of the plant beds [pp ii(v)-vi].
The general format of the record is that the parents are recorded as numbers with a superscript or sometimes as a named variety. Since sweet peas can be selfed, some crosses have only a single parent. The date of sowing and the date of planting out are recorded, together with other observations on the plants such as colour, height and petal form.
An entry on [page 45v] records a bet between Punnett and Bateson, 'RCP bets 10/- [shillings] these will be reds: WB was not so sure and takes this bet'. The plants on [pages 61v-62r and 125v-126] are marked 'important' or 'v important'. The records on [pp 79v-90 and 131-180v] include a series of tables showing scoring and classification of progeny. There is a photograph of sweet peas on [page 146].
