Sweet pea notebook '05 F' [1905 crosses], 1905
Scope and Contents
Notebook recording Bateson and Punnett's experiments with sweet pea crosses, covering sweet peas sown at the farm in March - April 1905.
The general format of the record is that the parents are recorded as numbers with a superscript or sometimes as a named variety. Since sweet peas can be selfed, some crosses have only a single parent. The date of sowing or planting out is often recorded, together with other observations on the plants such as colour and whether or not the plants were hooded, and cases of sterility [e.g. pp 113v-126]. The plant on [page 80v] is marked 'important'. The entry for the plant on [page 111] records that it 'got confused somehow with [plant] 112'; another such error is recorded on [page 75].
Records are paginated 1-126, followed by a run of blank pages. At the back of the notebook the plant numbers are listed in a schematic chart, perhaps representing the layout of the plants at the farm.
