Sweet pea notebook '04 F' [1904 crosses], 1904
Scope and Contents
Notebook recording Bateson and Punnett's experiments with sweet peas sown at the farm in 1904 (the letter F denotes plants grown at the farm).
The general format of the record is that the parents are recorded as numbers with a superscript or sometimes a named variety. Since sweet peas can be selfed, some crosses have only a single parent. The date of sowing or planting out is often recorded, together with other observations on the plants such as colour.
Some plants are marked ‘important’ [e.g. pp 26v-27r and pp 71v-72r]. The record on [page 104v-105r] includes a note initialled by Bateson. Records are skeletal from [pp 154-190] onward. The entry on [page 191] ends with the note 'rest need not be done', followed by a run of blank pages. At the back of the notebook are maps of the plant plots [pp iv-vi].
