Scope and Contents
The volume comprises heavily revised drafts of several chapters of 'The Weald of Youth' and preliminary notes for 'Siegfried's Journey' (here with the provisional title 'Some Experiences of a Soldier Poet'). It also contains (written from reverse) character sketches of Anzie Wylde and Thomas Hardy, and further miscellaneous notes under headings including 'Thoughts on Writing (Aliveness in Literature)'. NB. The final chapter numbers to which the drafts relate are provided in brackets. It includes: - watercolour frontispiece of a blank notebook entitled 'Opus 1941': /1r. - 'VI': draft and note (relating to Chapter VI): /2v-8r. - 'VII': draft and note (relating to Chapter VII): /8v-13r. - draft marked 'X' and 'XIII' (relating to Chapter XIII): /13v- 15v. - draft marked 'XIV' and 'XII' (relating to Chapter XIV): /16r- 18r. - draft marked 'XIII', 'XIV' and 'XV' (relating to Chapter XV'): /18v-20r; with note on the dates of revisions made. - 'XVI', draft (relating to Chapter XVI): /20v-22r, /23r and /24r. - notes on text, including incidents of failure described in various chapters, and 'Revision of Ballet Chapter': /22v-24r. - 'Notes on method of treating 1918-28 material' and 'Provisional title for 1915-20 volume. "Some Experiences of a Soldier Poet"': /24v- 31r. Written from reverse: /31v-44r. - 'Portrait of "Anzie"': character sketch of Leslie 'Anzie' Wylde: /40v-43v. - character sketch of Thomas Hardy, with outline of article on Hardy: /34v-40r and /32r-31v.
