Scope and Contents
The volume comprises heavily revised drafts of 'The Weald of Youth', together with notes on the progress of Sassoon's autobiography and 'Preliminaries for Part 3' (1914-1918); in pencil and ink. NB. The published chapter numbers to which the drafts relate are provided in brackets, where different. It includes: - abstract watercolour frontispiece and watercolour title ('The Weald of Youth'): /1r-2r. - note on Sassoon's writing schedule, with word counts: /2v. - note on the book, and structure and method: /3r-3v. - 'Preliminaries for Part 3 (Aug. 1914 - Nov. 1918)': notes for a short book, with mention of the influence of Rupert Brooke and Robert Graves on his poetry writing: /4r-4v. - note on railway travel: /7v. - '(Chap.X)': drafts concerning Gray's Inn, Rupert Brooke and London (relating to Chapters XIII-XIV): /9r-12v. - drafts and notes concerning 'Wirgie' [Helen Wirgman] (relating to Chapter XV): /5v-6r and /13r-15v. - '(Chapter XII)': drafts concerning Sassoon's great aunt Mozelle and Russian ballet (relating to Chapter XVI): /16r-19r. - 'Chap. XIII': drafts (loosely relating to Chapter XVII; includes unpublished sections on a trip to Selsey, the outbreak of War, and his uncle Hamo Thornycroft), with 'Note on the last two chapters of the book': /19r-27r. - 'Conclusion': partial draft and notes (relating to Chapter XVII): /27r-29r. - 'Chapter III': drafts concerning cricket and motorists (relating to Chapter IV): /40r-43r. - 'Chap.
