Scope and Contents

The volume contains draft passages of 'The Weald of Youth' and related notes, draft poems, and coloured illustrations. A draft poem and press cuttings are enclosed. Portions of some pages have been removed. 'The Weald of Youth': - preliminary notes on writing about 1908-14, in pencil: /1r-1v. - notes entitled 'Recipe' and 'Synopsis of Part I': /3r. - early draft entitled 'Outline of Chapter 1', in pencil: /3v-5v. Watercolour illustrations: - heraldic motif: /6v; urn: /7v; various decorated initial letters and Latin phrases: /10r-11r. Draft poems: - 'The Unlived Years' and 'The Hardened Heart', with watercolour decorations: /2r. - untitled, beginning 'In prime-past years there is no sadder thing than this': /2v. - 'On Scratchbury Hill in Wartime', with watercolour decoration: /8r. - five poems in pencil: untitled, beginning 'At edge of sleep with nothing in my head', 'A Gentle Remonstrance', 'Breezy June', 'The contrast', and 'News from Nowhere': /9r. - 'Sixty': /9v. - 'A Garden Statue': /11v. NB. Foliation is the archivist's. Three enclosures are housed separately.
