Scope and Contents

The volume contains diary entries for 30 Sep. 1927 - 21 May 1928, transcribed by Sassoon from his original diaries at MS Add.9852/1/26-27. The entries are heavily abridged and often reworked, with occasional annotations. Entries are arranged in two columns, numbered consecutively. The diary chiefly concerns Sassoon's relationship with Stephen Tennant, with frequent mention of the progress of his literary work, and entries on the deaths of Thomas Hardy (/23r-28r) and Edmund Gosse (/38r-40r).The volume also includes: - inserted photograph of Stephen Tennant seated in a horse and carriage: /front cover inside. - watercolour frontispiece marked 'Memoirs of a Mug' showing an mug with a human face: /1r. - note on the diary and Sassoon's process of diary writing: /2r. - a note on when Sassoon wrote the transcription (Mar.-May 1932): /2v. - quotation, unattributed: 'They cried "La Belle Dame sans Merci" hath thee in thrall!': /2v. - pasted in press cutting: Edmund Gosse on 'Mr Hardy's Last Poem': /23v. N.B. Blank from folio 41r. An enclosure is to be found in a separate envelope. The foliation is the archivist's.
