Scope and Contents
The volume is a ruled notebook marked '1922 I' and mostly comprises diary entries, notes from Sassoon's reading; and reflective passages on a variety of subjects.
Diary entries include frequent mention of horse racing, and /51v-64r. entries concerning Thomas Hardy and visits to Max Gate. It also includes drafts of poetry: /2v-3r. 'On Beauty'; /4r-4v. 'Visiting Blenheim Palace'; /5r. 'Ducal Survival'; /6r-7r. 'A Ducal Insignificance', later called 'A Ducal Anterior'; /8r-10r. 'Lines on being urged to write about Love'; /12v-13r. 'Romantic Drama'; /13v. untitled, begins 'There is little enough to be done'; /14r. untitled, begins 'I cannot write about the clouds'; /14v. untitled, begins 'Much have I praised you'; /17v. 'A Child's Kingdom'; /18v. 'To Any Father (who still thinks war inevitable); 108v. 'Wessie', a poem about Thomas Hardy's dog.
N.B. There are no loose enclosures or detached folios. The foliation is the archivist's. Blank from folios /64v-108r.
