Scope and Contents
The volume is a ruled notebook and mostly comprises diary entries. It covers the period of Sassoon's lecture tour in the United States of America. Entries were written in New York and Philadelphia and include mention of /5v. [W.B.] Yeats, /7r-7v. [éamon] de Valera, /6v-7r, /10v & /17r. Louis Untermeyer, and /18r. Kahlil Gibran, among others.
The volume also includes:
-notes for speeches largely on being a poet, reasons for writing war poetry, views on war, and considering how to convey war and nobility versus war and brutality, together with lists of poems to be read: /14r-14v; /22v-29r.
- drafts of poetry: /21r. untitled, begins 'You have no words to say'; /21v. 'Thomas Hardy'; /30v. untitled '(On the boat to New York)', begins 'Beyond life's howling hurricane', couplet.
- lists of people to write to: /30r. - quotation from W. James, begins 'To those who agree': /23r. - list of books taken away to New York: /2v.
N.B. Detached folios are to be found in a separate envelope. The foliation is the archivist's.
