Scope and Contents

The volume is a grid ruled notebook and mostly comprises diary entries and notes of social engagements written while at war in France and while convalescing in England.

Significant diary entries include: /2r-10r. an attack on Fontaine-les-Croisilles on the Hindenburg Line near Arras and receiving a shoulder wound (on 16th April); /10v-12v. 'Things to Remember' (impressions on the attack); /17v-18v. 'In the Ward. Morning' (written in hospital in London); /22v-24v. 'In the Ward (ii)'; entries written while convalescing in London (/25r and /27v-28r) and at Chapelwood Manor, Nutley, Sussex (/31v-39r, /42r-42v, /48r-50r) including mention of his need to make a protest against the War /48r.

The volume also includes:

- prose passages: /39v-41v. 'A Conversation'; /45v-46v. a draft of Sassoon's statement against the conduct of the war, with related notes; /55v-57r. 'The Wakening'.

- drafts of poetry: /15r-16r. untitled [later called 'Rear Guard']; /16v-17r. 'The Warmongers'; /19r-20r. 'Wounded'; /20v-21v. 'Reprieved'; /25v-27r. 'The Rest Cure', later called 'Hospital Routine'; /28v. 'Sniped'; /29v-30v. untitled, begins 'I know your body is but the dress you wear'; /36v-37r. untitled, notes for a poem beginning 'Cruelty of the body'.

- a list of [moneys received?] from newspapers for poetry printed: /20r.

- number of poems published by name of publication: /22r.

- notes from military briefing meetings, together with a copy of an operation order (catalogued as MS Add.9852/1/9/1): /13v-14r.

- a list of members of his battalion and their fates: /54r.

- quotations: /43r-45r. extracts 'From letters and reviews about my book'; /50v. A.E. [George Russell], begins 'the Heaven of heavens' and 'Refuge'; /51v. R. Burns, begins 'When I think on the Happy Days'; /51r-51v. L. Binyon, 'The English Youth'; /52r-52v. Margaret Woods, begins 'In many a place does this white morn of May' and 'Aeromancy'; /53r. R.L. Stevenson, begins 'I suppose none of us recognise'; /53v-55r. and /57v-58v. various authors and sources; /59r. Randall [Davidson], 'The War and the Gospel'.

- acquaintances' contact details: /60r.

- List of visitors to the hospital: /59v.

N.B. Sassoon wrote from both ends of this notebook; from folio /45v entries resume from the back of the notebook. There are no loose enclosures or detached folios. The foliation is the archivist's.
