Episodes: Review of 'The Changing Forms of Art' by Patrick Heron, 1955
Scope and Contents
In 'Episodes' Baxandall makes reference to an unpublished book review that he happened upon after writing the chapter 'Trumpets now not heard'. He wrote the review for a journal planned but not realised by his friend Geoffrey Strickland and describes the document as "dispiriting". The book 'The Changing Forms of Art' (1955) by Patrick Heron was "a cobbling together of ten years' exhibition reviews in 'The New Statesman'Â I bungle the issue of Heron's confused antithesis between 'abstraction' and 'figuration'. My manner is spuriously knowing and the tone is appalling". Contains a carbon copy of the original typescript review
