Correspondence with Renate Quaß, 1937-1996
Scope and Contents
Letters from Renate Quaà recalling her memories of the Baxandall household and giving an account of her life since 1938, and photographs of Renate and the Baxandall family and home taken in 1937-1938 by David Baxandall. Baxandall makes reference to Renate in 'Episodes: A Memorybook' published posthumously in 2010. The book includes a photograph of himself and Renate on a regular walk along the Glamorganshire Canal
Renate worked as an au-pair in the Cardiff home of David and Isobel Baxandall from 1937-1938. She returned to Saxony, Germany in 1938 and remained in contact with Isobel Baxandall until the war. In 1996 she contacted Michael Baxandall through the editorial staff of 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung'
