Letter to father, [Camp before] Sebastopol, 18 Feb. 1856
Scope and Contents
"I do not feel in the least hurry to become a benedict, as single life will suit me very well for some time to come", but if a rich woman should take a fancy to him, he would not let the chance slip, "my old affair in the south of England I think will not answer". Wintry weather has prevented a review of all the British troops today. Prospects of promotion in peace time not so good; will need an allowance of £300 a year if he comes home in the spring. An old friend reports that "my engravings are hung up at Newton Hall, where they make a very brilliant display".
