Reference Code: GBR/0012/MS Add.8952/67

Scope and Contents

He read Clark's critique in 'Pall Mall' and went to see the play at the Lyceum; 'Irving certainly most un-Romeo in the first act and as you say looks sad because old not because in love.'; he thought some of Irving's acting 'overdone' and 'too hysterical'; Ellen [Terry] was better in earlier parts; 'She don't seem to me to rise to the situation in her big speech when she contemplates her burial.'
