MS copy letter, George H. Bowers to Charles James Blomfield, Bishop of London, 16 Jan. 1854
Scope and Contents
Bowers asks him, former Visitor of College and Chapter, to "watch over our Chapter affairs as now before the Cathedral Commissioners.. Our present Visitor is hostile to us. He allies himself with our opponents." (Birley, Morley and Clegg, churchwardens in 1850 and active in Manchester Church Reform Association); Chapter does not know of their intentions or proceedings until they appear in print; unfair that Chapter's answers to Commissioners are made public before Report is submitted to Parliament; they will submit evidence to Commission but will not submit to secret accusations, especially by the Bishop; "We have no interest in wrong-doing"; they thought Manchester Parish Division Act would be final; parish remains undivided except for one church
