From Spencer Compton Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington (later 8th Duke of Devonshire), Secretary-of-State for War, Hol [?], 1 Feb. 1885
Scope and Contents
the various proposed routes for the Gordon relief expedition: 'I think that Sir A[ndrew] Clarke goes too far in the pertinacity with which he presses for a military movement [a railway from Suakin to Berber] for which he has no responsibility whatever, and which is discouraged by Lord Wolseley on whom the whole responsibility for the success of the expedition rests'; the relief of Khartoum now seems assured. On War Office notepaper.
