Survey on "The Needs of Urban African Women", 1954-1957

Scope and Contents

The survey was commissioned by the South African Institute of Race Relations in July 1953 with the terms of reference "to investigate existing African women's organisations and evaluate the extent to which they meet the meeds of African women". The survey was carried out by Mia Brandel Syrier in and around Johannesburg and Durban. The final report is dated February 1955. Some of the material was later used by Mrs Brandel Syrier in her book Black Woman in Search of God, Lutterworth Press 1962 (Box 4).
