Eagle was a keen botanist, with a particular interest in mosses and lichens, which are the subject of most of the present correspondence. After Eagle's death his collection of mosses was bought by Sir Henry Bunbury (1778-1860), 7th Baronet, of Barton Hall near Bury (Add.8184/42). Some or all of Eagle's botanical correspondence seems to have passed to his fellow Bury botanist, Edmund Skepper (1825-67). Skepper's widow gave the letters of William Wilson listed below (and probably also the other letters to Eagle in the collection) to the Revd. E.N. Bloomfield (a Suffolk man, but for more than half a century Rector of Guestling in Sussex), who published (among many other contributions to botanical journals) two articles on the moss flora of Suffolk in 1885 and 1888. Offprints of these articles, and several related items from Bloomfield's papers, are included below. Also in the collection are eight letters from W.M. Crowfoot of Beccles to an unidentified correspondent, mostly concerning the insects of Suffolk. Their relationship to the rest of the collection is unclear.
