General correspondence A - Z, 1840 - 1947
Scope and Contents
These are principally 19th century exchanges between authors and printers. Most letters are addressed to Charles John Clay, University Printer, and many also to the Vice-Chancellor. Many seem to be the predecessors to the 20th century ‘Book files’. The series includes proposals for publication, letter books of University Printers John Smith, Charles Felix Clay, James Bennet Peace, some from company representatives, letters of thanks for books received.
Correspondence relating to Bible publication is currently listed in PRESS 3/2, but the Paragraph Bible correspondence of 1863-73 is listed as PRESS 3/1/1/37.
Much of the correspondence with the Vice-Chancellor concerns the cost of manufacture and payments to authors for undertaking editions and commentaries.
Items PRESS 3/1/1/104 onwards [former reference Pr.B.13 are letters addressed to C.J. Clay, University Printer, unless otherwise stated. They relate to Press business in Cambridge and London, and are mostly from authors and aspiring authors on their publications. 1876-1885 (the bulk are dated 1880-85).
