Friedrich Hölderlin, circa 1971-1973
Scope and Contents
In 1967 Riley and Tim Longville published a jointly translated version of some poems by the German poet and philosopher Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) under the title In the 'Arms of the Gods: Versions of Hölderlin Volume I'. This was followed by a translation of 'Hyperion: The Thalia Fragment, What I Own: Versions of Hölderlin Volume II' in 1973 and a never-finished third volume of Hölderlin translations, the working title for which was 'Fragments'.*
Contains draft typescript translations of ‘The Thalia Fragment’, draft translations of poems published in 'What I Own', a draft translation of ‘The Death of Empedokles’ and a proposal for a Hölderlin book.
