Lucasian Professorship 'tradita'; with late eighteenth century catalogue, 1663 - 1943

Scope and Contents

The 'tradita' comprise papers, passed from one holder of the Professorship to the next, on property and accounting matters and scientific subjects, ca 1663-1830. A major constituent are the academic notes and papers of Professor John Keill, Savilian Professor of Astronomy at the University of Oxford 1712-21.

A catalogue was compiled in 1798. It is not known by whom or where. The list below follows the arrangement and numbering of the 1798 catalogue, although its rationale is unclear and many items are now missing or incomplete. Additional material not in the 1798 catalogue, deposited in the University Library in 1943, is catalogued as O.XIV 278.15.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This material was transferred to the University Archives from the Manuscripts section of Cambridge University Library on 8 Aug. 1995. Its former classmark (Res.1893-94a), assigned in 1934 on the move to the New Library, denoted 'Residue'; that is, unidentified manuscript material left on the Library shelves. It is not known when the material arrived in the University Library nor why it includes papers and letters of John Keill (1671-1721).
