  1. 1r. Andrew Banyer of Soham, yeoman, answered Nicholas [Felton], Bishop of Ely, in an action of trespass on the case relating to the supply of six milk cows and three [rams] worth 30 pounds, six shillings and eight pence, 20 Mar. 1623 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  2. 1r. Thomas Ashton senior of Stretham, yeoman, and Thomas Ashton junior of Stretham, yeoman, answered Richard Langford in an action of trespass that on 8 Sept. 1623 their livestock trampled and overgrazed the grass growing in Langford’s close situated in a field called Catfishers Field in Stretham. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  3. 1v. Richard Gunton of Sutton, yeoman, answered Roger Lawe in an action of trespass and assault that on 30 July 1623 he assaulted Lawe at Sutton. Gunton arrested; to pay costs and damages.
  4. 1v. Richard Gunton of Sutton, yeoman, answered Roger Lawe in an action of trespass and assault that on 29 July 1623 he assaulted Lawe at Sutton. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  5. 1v. John Clarke junior of Ely, gentleman, answered Robert Hills and Mary, his wife, in an action of trespass and assault that on 10 Sept. 1623 he assaulted Mary Hills at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  6. 2r. Balam Colvile of Emneth, Norfolk, gentleman, is summoned to answer Gilbert Cockett in an action of broken covenant concerning an indenture between the two men signed 20 Mar. 1620 at Wisbech relating to the lease of a messuage and approximately seven acres of land in Emneth situated in a field called Hallowcrofts. To proceed to the next session.
  7. 2v. Mary Barron of Emneth, Norfolk, widow and administrator of the goods and chattels of John Barron, lately of Wisbech St Mary, yeoman, is summoned to answer Thomas Parke esquire in an action of debt of 80 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 29 Jan. 1619 at Wisbech. To proceed to the next session.
  8. 3r.-v. Alice Newman of Upwell, widow, answered George Clarke in an action of trespass on the case. This is a very long entry; a number of breaches of promise are cited including the sale and supply of a stack of hay containing approximately 13 cart-loads of hay, 1 Apr. 1620 at Wisbech, and dispute over pasturage, 1621. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  9. 4r. Roger Heade of Wisbech, husbandman, answered Richard Gales and Elizabeth, his wife, in an action of trespass on the case that on 1 Mar. 1622 he slandered Elizabeth at Wisbech by publicly saying ‘you are an old witch’. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  10. 4r. Richard Greene of Elm, [occupation not stated], answered William Mann in an action of trespass on the case that on 1 June 1623 he slandered Mann at Ely by publicly saying, ‘you are a thief and you get your living with thieving and stealing’. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  11. 4r. Thomas Spaldinge of Leverington, husbandman, answered John Hurt in an action of trespass and ejection that on 10 Sept. 1623 he ejected Hurt from a messuage with appurtenances and 12 acres of pasture in Leverington Parson’s Drove which William Spaldinge had leased to Hurt. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  12. 4v. Rose Stafford of Haddenham, widow and executor of the last will and testament of George Stafford, lately her husband, answered [?Philip or Phineas] Gascoyne in an action of trespass on the case relating to a sum of money owed for a quantity of tanned leather, 10 Jan. 1622 at Haddenham. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  13. 5r. George Clarke of Fleet, Lincolnshire, husbandman, answered Alice Newman, widow, in an action of trespass on the case relating to various sums of money borrowed by Clarke between June 1620 and Mar. 1621, a breach of promise relating to the wintering and keeping with hay of a horse and number of other breaches of promise. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial. [See EDR E1/9/11, entry 17].
  14. 5v. Hugh Lee of Fleet, Lincolnshire, butcher, answered Samuel Buck, gentleman and an attorney of this court, in an action of trespass that on 10 July 1623 he broke and entered Buck’s house at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
