Ely, 10 Apr. 19 Jas I [1621]: Pleas and gaol delivery before [Henry] North and others. Preamble: letters patent; writ of assizes; gaol delivery commission.

  1. 1r. Richard Joyce of Whappled [?Whaplode], Lincolnshire, labourer, is indicted that on 31 Mar. 1621 he feloniously stole, took and led away three steers worth ten pounds and one heifer worth 40 shillings from John Hobson at Wisbech. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  2. 1r. Laurence Glynn of Tydd St Giles, labourer, is indicted that on 10 Oct. 1620 he feloniously stole, took and carried away eight eels to the value of four pence from George Acres at Tydd St Giles. Not guilty.
  3. 1r. Edward Joyce of Wisbech, husbandman, and Richard Wright of Wisbech, labourer, are indicted that on 28 Feb. 1621 they feloniously stole, took and carried away a spade worth 12 pence, a scythe worth two shillings, a soe [large tub] worth two shillings and a kilderkin worth two shillings from William Banton at Wisbech. Not guilty.
  4. 1v. John Attlesey of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 20 Feb. 1621 he feloniously stole, took and carried away a piece of leather worth six pence from George Tompson at Ely. Not guilty.
  5. 1v. Thomas Barkham of Brandon, Suffolk, tailor, William Reve of Wisbech, butcher, William Day of Ely, husbandman, Gilbert Firmerye of Wilburton, brick maker, John Richell of Wisbech, husbandman, William Pooley of Tydd St Giles, labourer, and Edward Newman, [place of abode and occupation not stated], are freed and acquitted.
  6. 2r. John Sendall of Witchford, yeoman, and Robert Nixe of Witchford, yeoman, answered Bartholomew Maynes, who was under the age of 21, in an action of trespass that on 20 Oct. 1620 they entered his close and house at Witchford and trampled on the grass growing there with their feet. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  7. 2r. John Baron of Outwell, Norfolk, yeoman, answered John Foxe in an action of trespass on the case relating to a payment of 40 pounds to be made after Foxe’s marriage to Helen Bradley, a relation of John Baron, 1 May 1612 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

Catherine Peirson of March, widow, answered John Williamson and Margaret, his wife, in an action of trespass on the case, 20 May 1620 at March, relating to possession of the following goods: a cow, a heifer, a calf, an [?ivoried] cupboard, a plank table, a form [? bench], a great hutch, a little hutch, a feather bed, a pair of flaxen sheets, three pairs of harden sheets, three pillows, three pillowberes, the best bolster, a coverlet, a blanket, three pewter platters, nine pewter dishes, a pewter pot, a brass pan, a kettle, the best brass pot, two candlesticks, a saucer, a salt cellar, an [?ivoried] chair, a cushion, a pair of silver hooks, a silver pin, a kercher, a rail [cloak], a silver purse, a leather bottle and three wooden bowls. Peirson arrested; to pay costs and damages.
  9. 3r. John Stanfeild, tailor, and Anne, his wife, administrator of the goods and chattels of Henry Duffield, lately her husband, who died intestate, answered Humphrey Devys in an action of broken covenant relating to an indenture between Humphrey Devys, son of William Devys of Ely, weaver, and Henry Duffield of Ely, baker, 21 Jan. 1610. To proceed to jury trial.
  10. 3v. William Crane of Ely, blacksmith, is summoned to answer William Rossell in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to several sums of money for meat, drink and lodging, 10 Oct. 1612 at Wisbech. Crane fined; to pay costs and damages.
  11. 3v. Memorandum that Robert Chapman, gentleman, brought a bill against Leonard Landeseale of Ely, gentleman, and attorney of this court, in an action of debt of 50 shillings relating to a bill of obligation of 13 Aug. 1622. Landeseale fined; to pay costs and damages.
  12. 3v. William Browne of Haddenham, yeoman, is summoned to answer Isabel Kirke, widow and administrator of the goods and chattels of Edward Kirke of Haddenham who died intestate, in an action of debt of five pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 19 Jan. 1613 at Haddenham. Browne fined; to pay costs and damages.
  13. 4r. John Papworth of Haddenham, husbandman, is summoned to answer William Gifford in an action of debt of 50 shillings which he borrowed, 20 June 1614 at Haddenham. Papworth fined; to pay costs and damages.
  14. 4r. Andrew Snoden of Wisbech, husbandman, alias labourer, answered William Lather in an action of debt of 20 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 8 July 1620 at Wisbech. Snoden fined; to pay costs and damages.
  15. 4r. Robert Wright of Tydd St Giles, yeoman, is summoned to answer Thomas Pigge in an action of debt of 12 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 1 Apr. 1620 at Wisbech. Wright fined; to pay costs and damages.
  16. 4r. Robert Stermyn of Tydd St Giles, yeoman, is summoned to answer Thomas Edwards, gentleman, in an action of debt of 20 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 23 Oct. 1619 at Wisbech. Stermyn fined; to pay costs and damages.
  17. 4v. William Knight of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer Stephen Bateman in an action of debt of eight pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 1 Dec. 1618. Knight fined; to pay costs and damages.
  18. 4v. Robert Stermyn of Tydd St Giles, yeoman, is summoned to answer John Marshall in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 25 Oct. 1617 at Wisbech. Stermyn fined; to pay costs and damages.
  19. 4v. John Coward of Field Side, March, husbandman, is summoned to answer Edmund Smithe in an action of debt of 50 shillings relating to a bill of obligation of 1 Aug. 1620 at Wisbech. Coward fined; to pay costs and damages.

  1. 5r. [20] Robert Wilsey of Tydd St Giles, yeoman, is summoned to answer Arnold Loverye in an action of debt of 28 pounds relating to the lease of seven acres of pasture with appurtenances in Tydd St Giles, 20 July 1612. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  2. 5r. [21] Simon Measures of Outwell, Norfolk, husbandman, answered Nathaniel Craddock in an action of trespass on the case relating to stuff [equipment or supplied] supplied to Agnes Measures, the daughter of Simon, including grogram, baize, russet lace, silk, fustian, buckram and canvas, 14 June 1619 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  3. 5v. [22] Christopher Floud, alias Fludd, of Upwell, Norfolk, yeoman, is summoned to answer John Toogood in an action of debt of 12 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 18 Mar. 1620 at Wisbech. The entry is incomplete.
  4. 5v. [23] David Cowper of Elm, husbandman, answered Edmund Welche in an action of trespass and ejection that on 10 June 1621 he ejected Welche from an acre of land with appurtenances in Elm which Origenus Musgrave had leased to Welche for a term which had not yet expired. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  5. 6r. [24] Thomas Aspland of Mepal, yeoman, answered Jonathan Stubbyn in an action of trespass that on 20 July 1621 he chased or hunted Stubbyn’s sheep and assaulted Stubbyn. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  6. 6r. [25] Jonathan Stubbyn of Sutton, gentleman, answered Thomas Aspland in an action of trespass that on 20 Sept. 1620 his livestock trampled, overgrazed and destroyed the barley growing in Aspland’s land in a field called Croftlands in Mepal. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  7. 6r. [26] Thomas Clarke of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer Nicholas Cowper, gentleman, in an action that on 24 Apr. 1621 he took 30 rams, 30 ewes and ten lambs worth 30 pounds belonging to Cowper from the King’s High Way at Ely. Clarke fined; to pay costs and damages.
  8. 6v. [27] William Parys of Ely, saddler, and Jeremiah Hutton of Ely, waterman, and Mary, his wife, answered Nicholas [Felton], Bishop of Ely, in an action of trespass on the case relating to the possession of a cupboard, a table, two bedsteads, a featherbed and 40 pairs of shoes, 17 June 1619.
