Preamble: letters patent; writ of assizes; gaol delivery commission.

  1. 1r. Sylvester Taverner of Wisbech, labourer, and John Taverner of Wisbech, labourer, are indicted that they assaulted and murdered Richard Reynton, gentleman, at Wisbech. Sylvester inflicted a mortal wound to Reynton’s stomach with an unsheathed sword, helped and abetted by John. Sylvester not guilty of murder but guilty of homicide, allowed benefit of clergy. John not guilty.
  2. 1v. Francis Redman of Haddenham, labourer, and Francis Raven of Haddenham, labourer, are indicted that on 20 June 1613 they feloniously stole, took and drove a wether sheep worth six shillings and eight pence from Thomas Castell, gentleman, at Haddenham. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  3. 2r. Richard Breame of Wisbech, maltman, answered Henry Deynes in an action of trespass on the case relating to the exchange of one coomb of malt for 12 shillings, 31 May 1613 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  4. 2r. [Downhallus] Burgisse of Moulton, Lincolnshire, gentleman, and Emma, his wife and executor of the will of Geoffrey Adamson lately of West Walton, Norfolk, yeoman, are summoned to answer Richard Carter in an action of debt of 200 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 27 Apr. 1592 at Wisbech. To proceed to the next session.
  5. 2v. James Rowe of Upwell, Norfolk, weaver, answered Christopher Fludd in an action of trespass on the case relating to the possession of a fork and a basket, 18 Aug. 1613 at Upwell. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  6. 2v. Henry Loader, alias Lovder, of Ely, yeoman, is summoned to answer David Ayer in an action of debt of 93 shillings and four pence relating to the lease of a tenement with appurtenances in Ely, 30 Apr. 1612 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  7. 3r. Robert Barne of Wisbech, smith, answered Richard Barnaby and Elizabeth, his wife, in an action of trespass and assault that on 10 Oct. 1612 he assaulted Elizabeth at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  8. 3r. Francis Bradwell of Wisbech, labourer, answered Peter Applegarfe and Alice, his wife, in an action of trespass on the case that on 1 Apr. 1613 at Wisbech he slandered Alice by publicly saying ‘she is a thief and has stolen as many ducks of mine as I have sold the eggs of them for a [noble] a week.’ Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  9. 3r. Robert Whaley of Wisbech, apothecary, answered John Crane junior in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt of eight pounds concerning a messuage with appurtenances situated in Wisbech. Whaley arrested; to pay costs and damages.
  10. 3v. Richard Hawslyn of Haddenham, labourer, answered Richard Munsey in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt of three pounds with John Abbott of Broughton, Huntingdonshire, according to a written obligation of 30 Sept. 1610. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  11. 4r. Thomas Wotton of Haddenham, husbandman, answered Roger Fletcher in an action of trespass that on 31 Dec. 1612 his livestock trampled and overgrazed the grass growing in Fletcher’s close, called Longhoone in Haddenham, and his pigs dug up the ground there causing damage. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  12. 4r. William Hovell of Thetford, husbandman, answered Richard Munsey in an action of assault that on 30 Aug. 1613 he assaulted Munsey at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  13. 4r. John More of Thetford, husbandman, answered Richard Munsey in an action of assault that on 30 Aug. 1613 he assaulted Munsey at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  14. 4v. Thomas Crosse of Haddenham, husbandman, answered Francis Gooday in an action of trespass that on 19 Aug. 1613 he entered Gooday’s close called the [thorrowte] in a field called Lyndonend and cut and took away grain growing there to the value of 40 shillings. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  15. 4v. John Thorowgood of Witcham, gentleman and executor of the will and testament of John Thorowgood late of Witcham, yeoman, is summoned to answer Richard Tyvsall and Alice, his wife, in an action of debt of 40 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 3 May 1606 at Ely. The entry is incomplete.
  16. 5r. Robert Ellesander of Littleport, labourer, and Richard Pinnys of Littleport, labourer, answered Thomas Crabbe in an action of trespass that on 2 Dec. 1612 they chased a horse belonging to Crabbe with a hound, gravely wounding the horse and causing it to die at a marsh called Westmore at Littleport. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  17. 5r. Richard Munsey of Haddenham, carpenter, answered Richard Hawslyn in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt of 31 shillings for a gelding, 25 May 1612 at Haddenham. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  18. 5v. William Pollard of Haddenham, husbandman, answered John Okey in an action of trespass on the case relating to a sum of 40 shillings which he borrowed on 14 Mar. 1613 at Haddenham. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  19. 5v. Peter Radley of Ely, waterman, answered John Beesley in an action of trespass that on 28 May 1613 at Ely’s great river or waterway he rowed and steered Beesley’s boat, in so doing breaking a potter’s vessel which was on the boat and causing damage. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  20. 6r. Thomas Hookley of Wentworth, yeoman, answered Robert Yonge in an action of trespass on the case that on 6 July 1613 he took and enclosed a horse worth four pounds belonging to Yonge at Wentworth. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  21. 6r. William Okey of Sutton, husbandman, Thomas Aspland junior of Mepal, husbandman, and Dorothy, his wife, and Edmund Aspland, son of Thomas, answered William Harrison in an action of trespass that on 2 Aug. 1613 they entered the close of Harrison at Sutton and with sickles did cut and reap the wheat growing there to the value of six pounds. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  22. 6r. Dorothy Pells of Ely, widow, is summoned to answer John Ramsdale in an action of debt of four pounds relating to the sale of various quantities of cloth including striped satin, lawn, silk ribbon, lace, kersey, cambric, baize, taffety, galloon, a pair of stockings, Holland cloth and others at various dates in July 1612 at Ely.   23. 6v. Henry Thorne of Ely, husbandman, answered Richard Clarke in an action of trespass on the case that on 18 May 1613 at Ely he slandered Clarke by publicly saying ‘you are a thief and I will prove you a thief and you have stolen sheep out of Smart’s flock [Edmund Smart of Ely, shepherd]. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  24. 7r. Peter Francklyn of Haddenham, gentleman, William Poope of Haddenham, yeoman, Oliver Blane of Haddenham, tanner, John Stanley junior of Haddenham, shoemaker, and Robert Kinderly of Haddenham, glover, answered Edward Phipers in an action of trespass that on 20 Aug. 1613 they took and carried away barley lying in swathes to the value of ten pounds from Phiphers’ close called West Field at Haddenham. The entry is incomplete.
  25. 8r. Edmund Webster of Elm, draper, is summoned to answer Henry Parker in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 11 Apr. 1595. The bond of obligation is recited. To proceed to the next session.
  26. 8r. Robert Kirke of Haddenham, yeoman, answered William Pollard in an action of trespass on the case relating to a sum of six pounds and the promise of pasture in Ewell Fen in Haddenham, 6 May 1612. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  27. 8v. William Clarke of Littleport, husbandman, and Richard Collyn of Littleport, shepherd, answered William Gyles in an action of trespass and ejection that on 28 Aug. 1613 they ejected Gyles from a share in 30 acres of pasture with appurtenances in Littleport which Thomas Day had leased to Gyles for a term which had not yet expired. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  28. 9r. Edward Phipers of Haddenham, husbandman, Thomas Phipers of Haddenham, husbandman, John Brewitt of Haddenham, labourer, and Thomas Miles of Haddenham, labourer, answered Thomas Castell, gentleman, in an action of trespass that on 31 Aug. 1613 they entered Castell’s close at Haddenham, trampled the grass growing there with their feet, and took and carried away four cart-loads of peas. There is discussion of the place and ownership of the close. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  29. 9v. William Farroe of Haddenham, labourer, and Joan, his wife, answered Edward Phipers in an action of trespass that on 1 Aug. 1613 their livestock trampled and overgrazed the grass growing in Phipers’ close at Haddenham. The entry is incomplete.
  30. 9v. Edmund Webster, alias Stanles, of Elm, yeoman, is summoned to answer Alice Reade, widow and executor of the will of Nicholas Palmer, in an action of debt of eight pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 6 Oct. 1600 at Elm. Webster fined; to pay costs and damages.
