Scope and Contents

Preamble: letters patent; writ of assizes; gaol delivery commission.

  1. 1r. William Edes of Haddenham, yeoman, is indicted that on 2 Apr. 1608 at Haddenham he assaulted, raped and carnally knew Elizabeth Chester contrary to statute. Not guilty.
  2. 1r. Walter Sperrie of Doddington, carpenter, is indicted that on 24 Aug. 1610 at about midnight he burgled the dwelling house of Joan Steele, widow, at Chatteris, and feloniously took and carried away 12 shillings and three pence of goods and chattels from a chest in her house and a [?pair of fetters] and two girdles or belts belonging to Robert Atkynson. Not guilty.
  3. 1v. Frances Jackson of Ely, spinster, is indicted that on 18 Mar. 1611 she feloniously stole, took and carried away an old [?bonnet or cap] to the value of four pence, a petticoat to the value of four pence, four [?neckties] to the value of a halfpenny each and a pair of shoes to the value of one pence from Frances [Aunier], widow, at Ely. Confessed; to be whipped.
  4. 1v. Walter Sperrie of Doddington, carpenter, is indicted that on 24 Aug. 1610 he feloniously stole, took and carried away a pair of fetters and two girdles or belts belonging to Robert Atkynson at Chatteris. Confessed; to be whipped.
  5. 1v. William Cones senior of Witcham, husbandman, William Coames of Witcham, husbandman, and Anne Stanfield of Wisbech, wife of Christopher Stanfield of Wisbech, labourer, are freed and acquitted.
  6. 2r. Thomas Milcksopp of Littleport, yeoman, answered Zacharias Smith in an action of trespass and ejection that on 20 Oct. 1610 he ejected Zacharias from three acres of pasture with appurtenances in Littleport which Matthew Smyth had leased to him for a term which had not yet expired. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  7. 2r. Robert Coles senior and Walter Bugles of Benwick, yeomen, answered John Peyton, knight, and John Peyton of Doddington, knight, in an action of trespass that on 1 Sept. 1609 they entered the close of Peyton at Doddington called Great Bradney Moor, trampled on the grass growing there and took and carried away 1000 [weight] of sedge. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  8. 2v. William Aspland of Downham, husbandman, answered William Greene in an action of trespass on the case that on 7 Aug. 1610 he falsely and maliciously accused Greene of stealing a brindled hewed heifer worth 30 shillings, causing Greene to be held at Wisbech Castle. Aspland acquitted; Greene arrested and fined for bringing a false claim.
  9. 2v. William Abbot of Walsoken, Norfolk, husbandman, answered Thomas Love senior in an action of trespass and assault that on 2 Mar. 1610 he assaulted Love at Wisbech. To proceed to jury trial.
  10. 3r. John Case of King’s Lynn, Norfolk, waterman, answered Christopher Stanfield and Anne, his wife, in an action of trespass and assault that on 26 Nov. 1610 he assaulted Anne at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  11. 3r. John Case of King’s Lynn, Norfolk, labourer, answered Christopher Stanfeild in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt for the sum of seven shillings for bread, beer and other provisions, 1 Oct. 1610 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  12. 3r. Christopher Wood of Elm, labourer, is summoned to answer John Adlard in an action of debt of 53 shillings relating to a bill of [?29] Feb. 1610 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  13. 3v. John Heading of Walpole, Norfolk, labourer, answered Robert Miles in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt of five shillings and four pence for bread, beer and other provisions, 3 Feb. 1611. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  14. 3v. Peter Stynton, William Sole and Edward Bennet, [places of abode and occupations not stated], answered Edward Kirke in an action of trespass that on 7 Oct. 1610 they entered the close of Kirke at Aldreth in Haddenham. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  15. 3v. James Barcock of Well, waterman, is summoned to answer John Case in an action of debt of five pounds, eight shillings and nine pence relating to the sale of nine chalder [chaldron] of coals, 1 Aug. 1610 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  16. 4r. Thomas Dickenson of Wisbech, apothecary, answered Nicholas Earick in an action of trespass on the case that on 8 Sept. 1610 he slandered Earick by publicly saying ‘you have taken my purse feloniously with three pounds in it’. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  17. 4r. Richard Earick of Emneth, Norfolk, labourer, answered Thomas Dickenson in an action of trespass and assault that on 10 Nov. 1610 he assaulted Dickenson at Wisbech. Earick counters that he was assaulted by Dickenson on the date given. To proceed to jury trial.
  18. 4r. Thomas Wensley of Wisbech, glover, answered William Harryson and Mary, his wife, in an action of trespass and assault that on 4 May 1610 he assaulted them at Wisbech. William and Mary Harryson fined for bringing a false claim. Wensley acquitted.
  19. 4v. Richard Hall of Walesey, husbandman, is summoned to answer John Hall in an action of debt of 90 shillings on [date not stated] at Whittlesey. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  20. 4v. Christopher Organ of Wisbech, miller, answered Michael Criplyn and Agnes, his wife, in an action of trespass on the case that on 29 Sept. 1610 at Wisbech Organ slandered Agnes by publicly saying ‘you are a thief and have stolen a bushel of rye’. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  21. 5r. Thomas Rogers of Tydd, Lincolnshire, [occupation not stated], is summoned to answer John Key in an action of debt of six pounds relating to the sale of three foals, 1 Sept. 1610 at Ely. To proceed to the next session.
  22. 5r. Francis Gooday of Haddenham, yeoman, answered Richard Berte in an action of trespass on the case relating to the [?treatment or cure] of two cows, 25 Mar. 1609 at Haddenham. The entry is incomplete.
  23. 5r. William Edes of Haddenham, yeoman, answered Richard Berte in an action of trespass on the case relating to the possession of various household goods including tables, cupboards, chests, chairs, pieces of pewter, pots and pans, feather beds, coverlets and sheets, 1 May 1609 at Haddenham. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  24. 5v. Thomas Pigg of Wisbech, fishmonger, is summoned to answer George Wilson in an action that on 27 Oct. 1610 he took six milk cows belonging to Wilson from a place called Ten Acres at Leverington Parson’s Drove. To proceed to the next session.
  25. 5v. Thomas Searle of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Henry Taylor in an action of trespass and assault that on 1 Oct. 1610 he assaulted Taylor at Whittlesey. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  26. 6r. John Peacock of Sutton, mercer, is summoned to answer William Tubby in an action that on 3 Oct. 1610 he took a horse belonging to Tubby from a place called North [Medlam] at Sutton. Damages to be assessed.
  27. 6r. John Welby esquire brought a complaint against Thomas Gunton, an attorney of this court, relating to an earlier case heard at Ely on 10 Aug. 1607 in which Welby was implicated in the taking of several heifers belonging to William Brigstock. Gunton pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  28. 6r. Adam Robbynson of Ely, glazier, answered Thomas Reyment in an action of trespass on the case that on 14 Mar. 1611 he slandered Reyment by publicly saying ‘there were certain geese stolen and eaten in your house and you were a partner in the stealing of them.’ Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  29. 6v. William Levitt of Ely, butcher, answered Robert Tynley, Archdeacon of Ely, in an action of trespass that on 20 Apr. 1610 he entered Tynley’s close at Witchford and cut down and carried away 60 ash trees to the value of 20 pounds. The entry is incomplete.
  30. 7r. Warrant of attorney, [list of names not transcribed].
