Membrane 1r.: Preamble: letters patent [blank]; writ of assizes; gaol delivery commission.

  1. 1r. Robert Tompson of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 20 Apr. 1605 he feloniously stole, took and drove 28 ewes worth three shillings each and 14 lambs worth two shillings each from Thomas Steward, knight, at Ely. Not guilty.
  2. 1r. Edward Doughtie of Stretham, labourer, and John Goodgame of Stretham, labourer, are indicted that on 10 Sept. 1604 they feloniously stole a purse with 14 pounds in numbered money from Richard Wynde at Stretham. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  3. 1r. George Dylliston of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 1 Aug. 1605 he feloniously took and drove 11 ewes worth four shillings each and 11 lambs worth two shillings each from Margaret Eldrington, widow. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  4. 1v. Richard Myall of Whittlesey, yeoman, is indicted that on 16 Aug. 1605 at Whittlesey he assaulted Thomas Cowarde, with sticks and daggers, and feloniously stole and carried away a shirt worth two shillings and six shillings in numbered money. Guilty; to be hanged.
  5. 1v. Richard Hedd of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 1 Aug. 1605 he feloniously stole, took and carried away a pair of stockings worth eight pence and a pair of shoes worth three pence from Nicholas Michell. Confessed; to be whipped.
  6. 1v. Ralph Grownde of Wisbech, husbandman, and Joan Hopwoode of Wisbech, spinster, are freed and acquitted.
  7. 2r. Richard Dowe of Wisbech, labourer, answered William Woods in an action of trespass on the case that on 23 Mar. 1605 he did draw and sell beer in his house. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  8. 2v. William Gyles of Elm, cleric, answered William Musgrave in an action of trespass on the case that on 12 May 1605 at Elm he slandered Musgrave, saying publicly that Musgrave was a night-walker who never came home empty-handed and that Musgrave broke his hedge. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  9. 2v. Thomas Arkenstall junior of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer Seth Chapman in an action of debt of 20 pounds according to a bill of obligation of 8 Oct. 1604 at Ely. Arkenstall arrested; to pay damages.
  10. 2v. Romanus Dixon of Ely, draper, is summoned to answer Thomas Hunt, knight, in an action of debt of six pounds relating to a bill of obligation of 26 June 1596 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  11. 3r. Henry Sayer of Ely, weaver, answered William Reade in an action of trespass on the case that on [day not stated] Aug. 1605 he slandered Reade at Ely, publicly calling him a conjurer who dealt in black arts and with the devil and that he had gained money in this way. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  12. 3r. John Gates of Sutton, husbandman, is summoned to answer John Greene in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to an arrangement to carry pasture [fodder] with his two wagons and teamware on [date not stated] at Sutton. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  13. 3r. John Gates of Sutton, husbandman, is summoned to answer John Greene in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to an arrangement to carry turfs with his cart and teamware on [date not stated] at Sutton. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  14. 3v. William Johnson of Leverington, yeoman, answered John Welbye esquire in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to seven acres of land dealt with at the baron’s court at the manor of [Cranwell], Lincolnshire, 25 Apr. 1604. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  15. 3v. Lawrence Rayment senior of Ely, butcher, is summoned to answer Henry Stennell, alias Gouldston, in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to the sale and supply of five lambs, 28 May 1604 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  16. 4r. John Howard of Worlington, Suffolk, waterman, answered Thomas Joyne in an action of trespass on the case relating to a promise to deliver all bonds and bills of obligation in his hands within a month, 27 Mar. 1602 at Wisbech. Howard fined; to pay damages.
  17. 4r. John Wassyngton of Chatteris, husbandman, answered William Dringe in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the sale and supply of 16 rams, 14 Jan. 1605 at Chatteris. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  18. 4r. Henry Wingfeild, [place of abode and occupation not stated], answered Thomas Scott, cleric, in an action of trespass on the case relating to an agreement to exchange a gelding for another gelding at Stone Fair, Great Cressingham, Norfolk, 6 July 1604. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  19. 4v. John Bull, [place of abode and occupation not stated], is summoned to answer Edward Browne in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt of 60 pounds owed by John Potts senior of Wilburton, gentleman, to Browne, 30 June 1599. Potts had leased a dwelling house and land in Wilburton called Gallants Farm to John Bull. Bull acquitted; Browne fined for bringing a false claim.
  20. 5r. Thomas Sumpter of Elm, yeoman, is summoned to answer Nicholas Draper in an action of debt of three pounds relating to the sale and supply of various quantities of cloth – kersey, fustian, buttons, silk – 4 Sept. 1604 at Elm. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  21. 5r. Barthus Stonne of Ely, labourer, is summoned to answer David Ayer in an action of debt of four pounds, six shillings and eight pence relating to the lease of a messuage with appurtenances, 30 Sept. 1603 at Ely. Stonne acquiited; Ayer fined for bringing a false claim.
  22. 5r. Robert Inman of Whittlesey, husbandman, and Thomas Grownde of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Arthur Bearde in an action of trespass that, with John Colles and John Smyth, they drove and chased sheep belonging to Bearde, 10 June 1605 at Whittlesey. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  23. 5v. John Arnolde of Haddenham, carpenter, is summoned to answer Adam Robynson in an action of debt of ten pounds relating to the sale of a cloak, 10 Aug. 1593 at Ely. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  24. 5v. Edward Bonde of Welney, yeoman, is summoned to answer Elizabeth Anderson in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to her salary for two years, 3 Feb. 1603 at Elm. Bonde is fined; to pay damages.
  25. 5v. Ralph Holland of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer Robert Ayer in an action of trespass on the case relating to the sum of money paid for [providing water and nourishment for a gelding and horse], 20 Mar. 1605 at Ely. Damages to be assessed.
  26. 6r. Richard Dawlinge of Ely, labourer, is summoned to answer Robert Ayer in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to the sale and supply of a [nayle] and various quantities of cloth (frieze, black cotton, Holland, lace, taffety and buttons), 20 Mar. 1594 at Ely. Dawlinge fined.
  27. 6r. John Foster of Witcham, husbandman, is summoned to answer Henry Vernon in an action of debt of 40 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 26 Mar. 1602 at Ely. Foster fined.
  28. 6r. Robert Yarner of Wilburton, cleric, is summoned to answer Romanus Dixon in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to the sale and supply of various quantities of cloth (broad, baize and [?hind-skin]), 16 Feb. 1605 at Wilburton. Yarner fined.
  29. 6r. Jeremiah Love of Sutton, yeoman, is summoned to answer John Greene in an action of debt of 40 shillings relating to the sale and supply of six geese, 12 Feb. 1605 at Sutton. Love fined.
  30. 6v. Thomas Cryspe of Ely, gentleman, and William Fletcher of Thetford, [occupation not stated], are summoned to answer John Day in an action of debt of four pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 14 July 1604 at Ely. Cryspe and Fletcher fined; to pay damages.
  31. 6v. Thomas Cryspe of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer John Daye in an action of debt of four pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 1 July 1604 at Ely. Cryspe fined; to pay damages.
  32. 6v. Henry Johnson of Outwell, tailor, is summoned to answer Nicholas Draper in an action of debt of 24 pounds relating to the sale and supply of various quantities of cloth – a piece of [Wessell] fustian, various other pieces of fustian, yellow decking, cards of buttons, canvas, whalebone, grey frieze, kersey, silk skeins, fringe, cotton – 4 Sept. 1604 at Elm. Johnson fined; to pay damages.
  33. 7r. Daniel Wilson of Ely, husbandman, is summoned to answer John Day in an action of debt relating to five coombs and a measure of barley according to a bill, 20 May 1603 at Ely. Damages to be assessed.
  34. 7r. William Coxe of Whittlesey, gentleman, is summoned to answer Richard Atkinson in an action of debt of 80 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 16 Dec. 1603 at Whittlesey. The bond of obligation is recited. Coxe fined; to pay damages.
  35. 7r. Stephen Reade of Sutton, husbandman, and William Tubbs of Sutton, husbandman, answered William Thomas in an action of trespass that on 16 Aug. 1604 they broke and entered Thomas’ close at Sutton lying in a marsh called Middlemore and took away six cart-loads of fodder to the value of six pounds, 30 shillings and four pence. Damages to be assessed.
  36. 7v. John Manfeild of Outwell, Norfolk, labourer, is summoned to answer John Eaton in an action of debt of 60 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 16 May 1603 at Wisbech. Manfeild fined; to pay damages.
  37. 7v. Percival Medley of Outwell, Norfolk, labourer, is summoned to answer John Eaton in an action of debt of 60 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 16 May 1603 at Wisbech. Medley fined; to pay damages.
  38. 7v. Percival Medley of Outwell, Norfolk, labourer, is summoned to answer John Eaton in an action of debt of 60 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 16 May 1603 at Wisbech. Medley fined; to pay damages.
  39. 8r. William Porter, [place of abode and occupation not stated], answered William Dudley in an action of trespass that on 2 Feb. 1605, with a certain Thomas Lewys, he took and led away 30 hogs (sheep) worth 100 shillings from Dudley at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  40. 8r. John Page of Willingham, poulterer, answered Toby Dawkyns in an action of trespass on the case relating to the sale and delivery of a horse coloured black-brown, 1 May 1605 at Haddenham. Page acquitted; Dawkyns fined for bringing a false claim.
  41. 8r. John Johnson of Ely, shoemaker, is summoned to answer Daniel Ayer in an action of debt of 53 shillings and four pence relating to the rent of a messuage with appurtenances in Ely which Ayer leased to Johnson, 30 Sept. 1603. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  42. 8v. Robert Ayer of Ely, draper, is summoned to answer Thomas Hunt, knight, in an action of debt of 60 pounds and four shillings relating to a bill of obligation of 26 June 1596 at Wisbech. The entry is incomplete.
  43. 8v. Robert Page junior appeared in person with information on behalf of the Crown that Thomas Joyne of Wisbech, yeoman, was unlawfully occupied as a brewer of common beer between 15 Sept. 1604 and September 1605 contrary to statute. Joyne acquitted.
  44. 9r. Christopher Stevenson of Outwell, [occupation not stated], is summoned to answer Anthony Greene in an action of debt of 90 shillings relating to the sale and supply of 20 kilderkins of beer, 6 Apr. 1605.
  45. 9r. Robert Page junior appeared in person with information on behalf of the Crown that John Standforth of Wisbech, yeoman, was unlawfully occupied as a brewer of common beer between 15 Sept. 1604 and September 1605 contrary to statute. Standforth acquitted.
  46. 10r.-v. Warrant of attorney, [list of names not transcribed].
