Ely, 27 Mar. 31 Eliz. [1589]: Pleas and gaol delivery before North and others. Membrane 1r.: Preamble: letters patent; writ of assizes. Membrane 1v.: gaol delivery commission.
  1. 1v. Elizabeth Taylor of Wisbech, spinster, being pregnant and having given birth to a male child, is indicted that on 24 Sept. 1588, she took him to a place called Castle Dike in Wisbech and feloniously threw the child in, killing him. Not guilty.
  2. 1v. Luke Thorne of Witchford, tailor, is indicted that on 16 Jan. 1588 he feloniously stole, took and led away a bay horse worth 30 shillings and a horse colt coloured yellow worth 20 shillings from Thomas Marche at Ely. Not guilty.
  3. 1v. William Chappell of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 25 Sept. 1588 he feloniously took and drove two oxen, one coloured brown worth 40 shillings and one coloured black worth 40 shillings, from Marmaduke Rignoll at Haddenham. Allowed benefit of clergy.
  4. 2r. John Jefferson of Wisbech, labourer, is indicted that on 6 Dec. 1588 he feloniously stole, took and carried away two measures of stammel cloth to the value of 20 shillings from Edward Whyte at Wisbech and on the same day a robe worth five shillings from Edward Tompson at Wisbech. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  5. 2r. Ellis Raddock of Ely, shepherd, is indicted that on 27 July 1588 he feloniously took and drove 17 sheep from Thomas Slayney at Witchford. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  6. 2r. Godfrey Cartwright of Aldreth in the parish of Haddenham, yeoman, Henry Hewett of Hill Row in the parish of Haddenham, labourer, John Tyffyn of Cambridge, shearman, and William Smyth of Sutton, labourer, are indicted that on 7 Jan. 1588 between the hours of 10 and 12 at night, they feloniously burgled, broke and entered the dwelling house of Richard Ley at Witchford putting Richard and his wife Frances in fear of their lives. They took and carried away a pair of flax sheets to the value of 16 shillings, two shirt bands to the value of 12 pence, five neckerchiefs to the value of three shillings, a pillow to the value of two shillings and 18 shillings in numbered money. Hewett and Smyth guilty; to be hanged.

William Boys of Whittlesey, husbandman, John Taylor of Wilburton, labourer, William Hodson of Wilburton, smith, John [Nax] of Witchford, husbandman, Robert Homes of Wisbech, butcher, Francis Jaxon of Welney, labourer, Thomas Byrde of Haddenham, labourer, William Nicholson of Aldreth, labourer, Lawrence Jaxon of Ely, weaver, John Gunton of Sutton, weaver, John Horne of [Eynesbury], Huntingdonshire, joiner, and Richard Bullock of [Eynesbury], Huntingdonshire, joiner, are freed and acquitted.

John Kaye of Holbeach, Lincolnshire, gentleman, answered William Votyer alias Gylham in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the sale and supply of various iron bars, nails, locks and horseshoes on 10 Nov. 1581 at Wisbech, the sale and supply of various bottles of wine and claret on 2 Dec. 1582 at Wisbech and the sale and supply of various foodstuffs including bread and ale, mutton steaks and chickens on 1 Feb. 1585 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  9. 4r. William Votyer, alias Guylham, of Wisbech, blacksmith, answered John Flidd in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to the sale and supply of six reed sheaves on 1 Aug. 1588 at Wisbech. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  10. 4v. Thomas Martyn of Brampton, Huntingdonshire, labourer, answered Thomas Berte in an action of trespass that on 28 Sept. 1588 his cattle trampled and overgrazed the crops growing in Berte’s close at Whittlesey St Andrew. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

Christopher Topping of Littleport, labourer, and James Topping of Littleport, labourer, answered Richard Crabb in an action of trespass that on 10 Aug. 1588 they forcibly ejected Crabb from a croft comprising six acres of land, called moor ground, lying in [Prales Ware], which Thomas Jervis of Ely, gentleman, had leased to Crabb for a term which had not yet expired. Judgement is against Crabb; the Toppings are acquitted.
  12. 5r. Philip Adam of Ely, gentleman, answered Thomas Blake, gentleman, in an action of debt of three pounds, 28 June 1586 at Ely. Judgement is against Blake; Adam is acquitted.
  13. 5r. Peter Barnard of Haddenham, yeoman, answered Thomas Blake, gentleman, in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to his debt, with a certain Robert Largent, to Blake of 33 shillings and four pence and the sale or supply of three yards of broad cloth, 10 Feb. 1588 at Ely. Order to impanel a jury.
  14. 6r. Christopher Govye of Haddenham, husbandman, answered Richard Wynde in an action of animal theft that on 3 Sept. 1588 he took four cows from a place called Coxebewe. The place and ownership of the land is contested. To proceed to the next session.
  15. 6r. Robert Farthing of Walpole, Norfolk, yeoman and administrator of the goods and chattels of Alexander Hallywell who died intestate, answered James Sallebanke in an action of debt of 20 marks relating to a bond of obligation of 31 Oct. 1584 at Wisbech. Farthing states he has received no goods or chattels from Hallywell’s estate. To proceed to the next session.
  16. 6v. George Willens of Wisbech, tailor, answered Robert Gyrding in an action of trespass on the case relating to the sale of a coomb of oats, 22 Dec. 1587 at Wisbech. The entry is incomplete; no outcome is stated.
  17. 7r. John Hawes of Ely, gentleman, answered Roger Owtkawe in an action of trespass on the case relating to a debt of ten pounds with a certain Thomas Ducke of Ely, 10 Sept. 1586 at Ely. The action is demurred.

[18] Nicholas Dixie of Ely, labourer, and John Hamond of Ely, baker, are indicted that on 9 June 1589 they feloniously broke, entered and burgled the dwelling house of Thomas Gunton at Ely putting Thomas, his wife Elizabeth and servant, Isabelle Cooke, in fear of their lives, and took and carried away a sack with three modius [a bushel] of wheat meal, and on 24 Mar. 1589 they feloniously took and carried away two sacks with four bushels of barley from Thomas Gunton at Ely. Hamond is further indicted that on 30 Apr. 1589 he feloniously took and carried away two sacks with six bushels of beans from Thomas Gunton at Ely. Dixie not guilty; Hamond guilty, allowed benefit of clergy.
  2. 8v. [19] John Carter of Wisbech, mason, is indicted that on 4 Apr. 1589 he broke and entered the close of William Hodgeson at Leverington, and feloniously took and carried away a piece of linen cloth to the value of six shillings and eight pence. Not guilty.

[20] John Fondwnying of Upwell, labourer, is indicted that on 17 Apr. 1589 he feloniously stole, took and carried away a basket to the value of six pence, a yard of Holland cloth to the value of two shillings, two kerchers to the value of 16 pence, a ruffed band to the value of 12 pence, a gorgett to the value of 12 pence, a handkerchief to the value of 12 pence and a table napkin to the value of 12 pence from Thomas Welles at Ely. Not guilty.

[21] William Parkyn of Wisbech, labourer, is indicted that on 30 Sept. 1588 at Wisbech he comforted and gave shelter to Jerome Speede of Shelton, Nottinghamshire, labourer, who was later indicted before Roger Shute at Nottingham for feloniously stealing two heifers at Haslocton [Aslockton], Nottinghamshire, for which he was hanged. Parkyn not guilty.

[22] Helen Wante, wife of John Wante of Witcham, being a witch as well of men as beasts, is indicted that on 18 Dec. 1588 at Witcham she used, exercised and practiced enchantments and magical arts on Richard Corse causing him to languish and that on 3 June 1589 at Witcham she used, exercised and practiced enchantments and magical arts on Prudence Springe causing her to languish. The entry is incomplete; no outcome is stated.
  6. 9v. [23] George Pennye of Witchford, labourer, is indicted that on 24 June 1589 he feloniously stole, took and drove two calves worth five shillings from John Nixe at Witchford. Guilty; allowed benefit of clergy.
  7. 9v. [24] John Vernam of Stretham, labourer, is indicted that on 7 Apr. 1589 he feloniously stole, took and carried away half a bushel of barley to the value of eight pence from an unknown person at Stretham. Confessed; to be put in the stocks.
  8. 10r. [25] Arthur Heynes of Eastrea, fisherman, answered William Richards in an action of assault that on 16 Nov. 1588 at Whittlesey he assaulted Richards with arms. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  9. 10r. [26] William Richards of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Arthur Heynes in an action of trespass and assault that on 20 July 1586 at Whittlesey he assaulted Heynes with arms. He is indicted with the same charge on 8 July 1587 and on 6 July 1588, both at Whittlesey. Pled not guilty. The entry is incomplete.
  10. 10v. [27] Joan Dawkyns, widow, Daniel Dawkyns and Tobias Dawkyns [place of abode and occupations not stated] answered John Kyrkes in an action of trespass that on 10 Oct. 1588 they broke and entered Kyrkes’ close at Haddenham at a place called Netherstoken, allowed their livestock to trample and overgraze the grass growing there, and cut down and carried away two post rails, planks and poles to the value of 30 shillings. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  11. 10v. [28] William Rowle brought an action against William Carter of Stuntney, yeoman, of trespass on the case that on 15 June 1589 at Ely Carter did publicy slander Rowle as a rebel and a traitor to the Queen. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  12. 11r. [29] Gabriel Denn of Guyhirn, labourer, answered Thomas White in an action of trespass that on 4 Mar. 1589 his livestock trampled and overgrazed the grass growing in Denn’s close at Guyhirn. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

[30] Ralph Delahaye of Terrington, Norfolk, gentleman, answered William Fletcher and Bridget, his wife, in an action of trespass and assault that on 31 May 1589 he assaulted and made affray on Bridget, breaking her arm and putting her in despair of her life. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  14. 11v. [31] John Bampton, alias Banton, senior of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Arthur Heynes in an action of trespass on the case that on 1 Mar. 1589 at Whittlesey he did publicly slander Heynes as a thief. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  15. 12r. [32] Lawrence Fayreclyffe of Wisbech, fuller, answered Robert Attebrige in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to a debt of 21 pounds and the sale of a messuage with appurtenances in Wisbech at [the Eyebrinke], 30 Apr. 1589. The entry is incomplete; no outcome is stated.
  16. 12v. [33] Ralph Bampton of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Arthur Heynes in an action of trespass on the case and breach of promise relating to 20 pikes, 20 perches and 40 eels, 20 Apr. 1589 at Whittlesey. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  17. 12v. [34] John Preist of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Arthur Heynes in an action of trespass on the case that on 4 Jan. 1589 at Whittlesey he took and carried away Heynes’ boat worth 40 shillings. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
  18. 13r. [35] William Lamkyn junior [place of abode and occupation not stated] is summoned to answer John Normington in an action of debt relating to a bond of obligation between William Lamkyn senior and John Fatherbye of Godmanchester. Denies breach of promise; to proceed to jury trial.
  19. 13r. [36] Richard Lee of Wisbech, yeoman, is summoned to answer Joseph Smith in an action of debt of 9 pounds, 2 July 1586 at Haddenham. To proceed to the next session.
  20. 13v. [37] John Hawes of Ely, gentleman, is summoned to answer Thomas Seagrave of Fulbourn, cleric, in an action of debt of 80 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 9 Sept. 1579 at Ely. Hawes is fined.
  21. 13v. [38] Stephen Legate of Whittlesey, yeoman, is summoned to answer Ralph Gray in an action of debt of 40 pounds relating to a bond of obligation of 10 Apr. 1587. Legate is fined.
