Membrane 1r. Preamble: letters patent, writ of assizes, gaol delivery commission.

Membrane 1v.

1. Peter White of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 29 Apr. 1583 at Ely he feloniously took and carried away a skiff [boat] to the value of 28 shillings from Henry Nicholson. Not guilty.

2. Thomas Mothy of Wisbech, labourer, is indicted that on 6 May 1584 at Wisbech he feloniously took and carried away seven shillings in numbered money of goods and chattels of Thomas Howes. Not guilty.

3. Elizabeth Wilkensen of Newton, spinster, is indicted that on 2 Aug. 1584 at Wisbech she broke and entered the outbuilding or shed, called a boothe, of John Cloppham and feloniously took and carried away a kettle to the value of five shillings. Not guilty.

4. John Wright of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 14 May 1584 at Ely he feloniously took and led away a horse to the value of four pounds from Edward Ryche. Guilty; to be hanged.

5. Thomas Sex of Wisbech, labourer, is indicted that on 28 May 1584 at Wibech he feloniously struck a mortal blow to the right thigh of Richard Taylor with a sword causing him to die. Guilty; no goods or property to forfeit.

6. John Sturges of Ely, labourer, is indicted that on 6 Mar. 1584 at Littleport he feloniously took and carried away a shirt to the value of two shillings, a hat to the value of two shillings and a yard of linen cloth to the value of four shillings from Nicholas Crowe. Pled not guilty; verdict not stated.

7. Richard Bennetland of Littleport, labourer, is indicted that on 28 May 1584 at Littleport he feloniously took and carried away a neckerchief to the value of two pence from Agnes Sprunt. Guilty; no goods or property to forfeit.

8. John Sharpe of Wisbech, labourer, Anne Shreadly of Wisbech, spinster, John Chadborne of Ely, shoemaker, William Catton of Witchford, husbandman, Thomas Smythe of Leverington, labourer, Joan Hylton [place of abode not given], spinster, John Dale of March, gentleman, William Goady of Hill Row, Haddenham, yeoman and Joan Snedell [place of abode not given], spinster, arrested on suspicion of felony. The entry is not completed and is followed by two blank membranes.

Membrane 3v.

9. Robert Coker of Aldreth, basket maker, and William Chawner of Aldreth, weaver, answered John Kyrke in a plea of trespass that on 24 June 1583 they broke and entered the close of Kyrke at Aldreth, and their cattle trampled and destroyed the grass growing there. Coker and Chawner dispute the place and ownership of the pasture. To proceed to jury trial.

10. William Rochell, alias Anthony, of Whittlesey, husbandman, answered Thomas Rossell in a plea of trespass on the case relating to the purchase of a messuage with appurtenances and forty acres of customary land and pasture lying in Whittlesey on 22 Aug. 1580. Rochell pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

11. William Sturmyn of Wisbech, yeoman, answered Thomas Robynson, yeoman, in a plea of trespass on the case relating to an orchard with appurtenances in Wisbech held in right by Jacquemine, the wife of Thomas Robynson, for the term of her life. Sturmyn pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

12. Thomas Mone of Wisbech, butcher, answered Henry Anslowe in a plea of trespass on the case relating to the bargain and sale on 14 Feb. 1584 at Wisbech of [260 pounds] of hops for eighty shillings. The judgement goes against Anslowe; Mone is discharged.

13. John Mallyn of Haddenham, husbandman, Cuthbert Browne of Haddenham, husbandman, and Thomas Miller of Haddenham, husbandman, answered Thomas Fypers in a plea of trespass that on 20 Apr. 1584 they forcibly entered Fypers’ close lying in Haddenham in a field called [West Northeefylde], and their livestock trampled and destroyed the grass and corn growing there. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

14. William Kent of Streatham, husbandman, and Thomas Goade of Streatham, labourer, answered a plea from John Jackson that on 17 July 1584, they forcibly broke and entered the close of Jackson at Streatham and took ad carried away three cartloads of hay to the value of forty shillings. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

15. Thomas Wendham, alias Barbell, of Tilney, Norfolk, yeoman, answered William Sturman in a plea of trespass on the case relating to the sale of 100 coombs of oats on 14 Apr. 1584 at Wisbech. Wendham disputes the measurement and quantity of oats; to proceed to jury trial.

Membrane 6v.

16. John Hunt of Chatteris, yeoman, answered John Ficas in a plea of trespass on the case that on 16 June 1583 at Chatteris he, in scandalous words, accused Hunt of stealing four sheep. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.

17. John Hawkers of Swaffham Prior, husbandman, answered Ralph Holland, gentleman, in a plea of force and arms that on 20 Nov. 1583 he broke and entered the close of Holland at Witchford and ploughed five acres of land. Pled not guilty; to proceed to jury trial.
